maltatoday | SUNDAY • 26 JANUARY 2020 17 COMMERCIAL MARK Mercieca, Matthew Aquilina and Alexander Gutev are the winners of the BOV Final Year Best Students' Projects Awards in Engineering organised by the Chamber of Engineers. Mark Mercieca won the 2018 Mechani- cal Award with his project 'Modular De- sign of a Reconfigurable Cyber Physical Production System.' This project aims to explore emerging technologies in the manufacturing field, and the impact on the current manufacturing landscape. Matthew Aquilina's dissertation 'Design and Implementation of a Smart Wheel- chair' won the Electrical Award with the design of a smart wheelchair with auton- omous and remote capabilities from the ground up. Alexander Gutev, a graduate from the University of Malta in Bachelor of Com- puting Science in 2018 won the ICT award with his project that follows the tracking of objects in 3D video content. Presenting the awards to the winners, Albert Frendo, Chief Credit Business De- velopment Officer at Bank of Valletta said 'Engineers make things happen. Such pro- fession inherently propels innovation, cre- ativity and efficiencies which are essential ingredients for creating economic wealth and growth. It is with great pleasure that I present the BOV awards to these students who have distinguished themselves and achieved outstanding engineering accomplishments that will leave an imprint on the evolve- ment of engineering in Maltese society.' Over the past years, the two parties have introduced the BOV Engineering Student Award, with the aim of encouraging the top engineering students to expose themselves and their projects to international fora, thereby in- vesting in their future. Top engineering student projects rewarded by BOV MIDI'S restoration of The Garden Battery located at Tigne Point in Sliema was recently recognised for its outstanding restoration works during the 14 edition of the Architectural Heritage Awards, organised by local culture and heritage NGO, Din l-Art Helwa. MIDI was awarded a Diploma for outstanding contribution to Maltese cultural heritage and to the achievement of architectural excellence in Malta by the admirable restoration and conservation of the Garden Battery. Held in collaboration with the Kamra tal-Periti, these awards aim to celebrate architectural excel- lence within a Maltese context, encourage the reha- bilitation and re-use of old buildings and recognise the dedicated work of those who are active in the field of restoration.
