Although they both relate to the same protagonist, there are some important differences between the two works. Verdi's work is based on Shakespeare's Othello, whereas Rossini's opera is based on a French adaptation of the sto- ry Othello, ou le More de Venise by Jean-François Ducis. The op- era differs from Shakespeare's version in that the story happens in Venice not in Cyprus, Iago is less diabolic and the role of Rod- rigo is more elaborate. Rossini's work might be lesser-known than Verdi's opera, but it was by all means a milestone in the de- velopment of opera as musical drama. This seminar will introduce you to both operas. The artis- tic directors Kenneth Zammit Tabona and Colin Attard will touch upon the wider context of the importance of opera on the Maltese Islands.
