15 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 5 FEBRUARY 2020 WHAT'S ON Theatre UNTIL 14 FEBRUARY Scheherazade Scheherazade, a solo show by well-known local artist Charlie Cauchi, will take over and trans- form Valletta Contemporary into a space where coercion and cru- elty, love and violence, sex and entertainment are made palpa- ble. Cauchi's work consists of a multi-disciplinary and immer- sive installation built around the concept of a London Soho night- club. The exhibition will act as a pinpoint of light into the history of this dark underbelly, a place once renowned as the scandalous city of vice. Scheherazade is also a major female character in middle east- ern literature and the narrator of the tales in 'A Thousand and One Arabian Nights', keeping the sultan alive as an act of self-pres- ervation. The shows starts at 7.30pm at Valletta Contem- porary. Arthur Dumas is an actor, performer and a theatre-maker based in France. He trained at the Jacques Lecoq Theatre School in Paris, which specialises in mime and physical theatre. For the last three years, Dumas has been coming to Malta regu- larly since he forms part of the theatre company Teatru Tripti- ku where he performs physical theatre works. Having already participated in the first session of Movimento, Dumas believes that the initiative of this project opens a beautiful space for shar- ing and research between artists from all horizons. He considers movement as life. Bodies move and react to every- thing, to the environment, to others, to thoughts, to emotions. During this month's session of Movimento, Dumas intends to show how movement allows us to translate life as it is on stage. The form of this masterclass is in- tended to be fun and educational. This event is recommended for anyone (recommended age 12+) who is curious about dance and how movement is given life. It should also interest students who are studying any form of contem- porary art, teachers who are in- tent on growing their spectrum of knowledge, and individuals who have shown an openness in keeping movement, and critical thinking alive in their lives. Price: €10 (€8 for students, se- niors and Heritage Malta mem- bers). Tickets can be acquired at https://shop.heritagemalta.org/ Music 8 FEBRUARY Two Opera Tales of Otello This spring opera lovers will have the chance to discover both Gioachino Rossini's and Gi- useppe Verdi's version of Otello thanks to Teatru Manoel and Gaulitana: A Festival of Music. Although they both relate to the same protagonist, there are some important differences between the two works. Verdi's work is based on Shakespeare's Othello, whereas Rossini's opera is based on a French adaptation of the sto- ry Othello, ou le More de Venise by Jean-François Ducis. The op- era differs from Shakespeare's version in that the story happens in Venice not in Cyprus, Iago is less diabolic and the role of Rod- rigo is more elaborate. Rossini's work might be lesser-known than Verdi's opera, but it was by all means a milestone in the de- velopment of opera as musical drama. This seminar will introduce you to both operas. The artis- tic directors Kenneth Zammit Tabona and Colin Attard will touch upon the wider context of the importance of opera on the Maltese Islands. Two Opera Tales of Otello will take place from 10:30am till 1pm. This event is free however book- ing is required. The event will be held at the Italian Cultural Insti- tute. The heart of the action takes place in Valletta from 3pm though various towns and vil- lages across the Island have their own version of festivities. For a particular interpretation, visit Nadur, Gozo, where car- nival takes on a more macabre and funny mood.
