maltatoday | SUNDAY • 9 FEBRUARY 2020 10 LISTINGS WHAT'S ON Theatre UNTIL 14 FEBRUARY Scheherazade Scheherazade, a solo show by well-known local artist Charlie Cauchi, will take over and trans- form Valletta Contemporary into a space where coercion and cruelty, love and violence, sex and entertainment are made pal- pable. Cauchi's work consists of a multi-disciplinary and immer- sive installation built around the concept of a London Soho night- club. The exhibition will act as a pinpoint of light into the history of this dark underbelly, a place once renowned as the scandal- ous city of vice. Scheherazade is also a major female character in middle eastern literature and the narrator of the tales in 'A Thou- sand and One Arabian Nights', keeping the sultan alive as an act of self-preservation. The shows starts at 7:30pm at Valletta Con- temporary. The interdiscipli- nary profile of this performance presents the narrative through a cycle of video-art scenes, accom- panied by a live piano score and modular analog synthesizers. In Kafka's Insect, the narrative is presented through the sections in the story that portray sound, such as the prodding of feet as the furniture in Gregor's room is moved around by his mother and sister, a medicinal glass vial shat- tering on the floor, rain pelting against the window panes … etc. The accessibility of the perfor- mance transcends the demand for the spoken word through the universal language of imag- es, sound and music. The video was shot with the Achromat lens created in France in 1839. This lens captures an illuminous soft focus with rich textured back- grounds - rarely achieved with modern lenses. https://www. facebook.com/Kafkas-Insect. Other UNTIL 4 MARCH BOV Retrospective Exhibition 2020 Bank of Valletta will be launch- ing the 27th edition of its Ret- rospective Art Exhibition cele- brating the works of Celia Borg Cardona and her bold, vigorous and expressive brushworks. The BOV Retrospective Art Exhibition will be hosted at the Gran Salon at the Auberge de Provence (National Museum of Archaeology) in Triq ir-Repub- blika, Valletta. This magnificent baroque hall, a work of art in itself, is currently being metic- ulously restored through the support of Bank of Valletta. It provides a wonderful backdrop for the works of Celia Borg Car- dona. The exhibition will be inaugu- rated by H.E. George Vella, Pres- ident of Malta and will be open to the public as from 1 February till 4 March 2020 from 9am till 5pm every day with the last ad- mission at 4:30pm. The exhibi- tion will feature 29 works of art showcasing the use of different media and follows the evolution of Celia's work from 2002. 13 - 28 FEBRUARY STILL STILLS - Exhibition by Anna Gale Art Galleries, Palazzo de La Salle, Valletta Following last year's solo exhibition in Malta, STILLS, Anna Galea is pushing boundaries in STILL STILLS - this time using her favourite me- dium, watercolour. Most of the works in this challenging and unforgiving medium are huge by watercolour standards – many well over a metre high or wide. Anna's watercolour work has been honored as masterful in places like the United States and Italy, and her dramatic use of wa- tercolour in large-scale paintings does away with the perception that watercolour is for romantic landscapes. Attendance is free of charge. The lecture will discuss the statue within the context of Cafà's work, and the wider framework of the Roman Ba- roque style. The event is a joint collaboration between Heritage Malta and the Department of Art and Art History within the University of Malta. St Rose of Lima, who lived between 1586 and 1617, became the first female saint of the new world in April 1668. For this occasion, Cafà's marble statue of the Dominican saint was displayed prominently on the Cathedra of St Peter, in the titular apse of the Vatican, directly in front of Bernini's iconic ensemble within the same Basilica. Melchiorre Cafà was meant to be the artistic protag- onist, but his untimely death seven months prior to the Be- atification tragically precluded his presence from the well-cho- reographed ephemeral spectacle commissioned by the powerful Dominican Order.
