15 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 12 FEBRUARY 2020 WHAT'S ON Theatre UNTIL 14 FEBRUARY Scheherazade Scheherazade, a solo show by well-known local artist Charlie Cauchi, will take over and trans- form Valletta Contemporary into a space where coercion and cru- elty, love and violence, sex and entertainment are made palpa- ble. Cauchi's work consists of a multi-disciplinary and immer- sive installation built around the concept of a London Soho night- club. The exhibition will act as a pinpoint of light into the history of this dark underbelly, a place once renowned as the scandalous city of vice. Scheherazade is also a major female character in middle east- ern literature and the narrator of the tales in 'A Thousand and One Arabian Nights', keeping the sultan alive as an act of self-pres- ervation. The shows starts at 7.30pm at Valletta Contem- porary. Other 21-25 FEBRUARY Carnival 2020 February brings along the car- nival week, which takes on a tra- ditional pattern; extravagantly coloured floats are perched on lorries ready for the procession, children running around in fan- cy costumes and Malta's main nightlife centre, Paceville, catch- ing the late night carnival goers who pile into the clubs and bars, still wearing their outrageous outfits. The heart of the action takes place in Valletta from 3pm though various towns and vil- lages across the Island have their own version of festivities. For a particular interpretation, visit Nadur, Gozo, where car- nival takes on a more macabre and funny mood. Most of the works in this challenging and unforgiving medium are huge by watercolour standards – many well over a metre high or wide. Anna's watercolour work has been honored as masterful in places like the United States and Italy, and her dramatic use of wa- tercolour in large-scale paintings does away with the perception that watercolour is for romantic landscapes. TODAY Cafà's Golden Rose A public lecture by Professor Keith Sciberras on Melchiorre Cafà's statuette, 'St Rose of Lima', will be held on Wednesday 12 February at 6:30pm at MUŻA. Attendance is free of charge. The lecture will discuss the statue within the context of Cafà's work, and the wider framework of the Roman Ba- roque style. The event is a joint collaboration between Heritage Malta and the Department of Art and Art History within the University of Malta. St Rose of Lima, who lived between 1586 and 1617, became the first female saint of the new world in April 1668. For this occasion, Cafà's marble statue of the Dominican saint was displayed prominently on the Cathedra of St Peter, in the titular apse of the Vatican, di- rectly in front of Bernini's iconic ensemble within the same Basil- ica. Melchiorre Cafà was meant to be the artistic protagonist, but his untimely death seven months prior to the Beatification tragi- cally precluded his presence from the well-choreographed ephem- eral spectacle commissioned by the powerful Dominican Order.
