21 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 26 FEBRUARY 2020 SPORTS MOTORSPORTS ON Sunday 16 February 2020 Assocjazz- joni Sport Muturi u Karozzi successfully organized the sixth event of the ASMK Pasta Poiatti 2019/2020 National Auto- cross Championship with 11 competi- tors. This particular Sunday program was a special one because of the last item of the day which was the second edition of the 2020 Ladies Demolition Derby with eight competitors. The day's Autocross results show: Jean Paul Grech on his Peugeot 106 who won the Class A Final race. He was followed by Andrew Pisani on an Opel Nova and by Noel Zammit on his Fiat Punto. Fourth and fifth places were won by Aquilina Kurt and Karl Micallef both on Opel Corsa cars. Sixth place was won by Nicolai Aquilina who withdrew earlier in the race final be- cause of mechanical faults. In the Autocross Class B Final Justin Buttigeig on his Opel Nova was seen to dominate this race final and was followed by Paul Formosa on a Fiat Uno and by Mi- chael Galea on a Ford Escort. Fourth place was won by Jerome Peplow on Kia Avella. The participants of this second edition of the Ladies Demolition 2020 were Panthea Butler on an Opel Corsa, Nadette Magro on a Kia Avella, Brenda Bongailas on a Peugeot 205, Francesca Schembri, Jessica Magro Butler and Michaela Sammut all on Volkswagen Polo cars, Maronia Mallia on a Lada Samara and Carol Bowell on a Fiat Uno. The Demolition Derby starts at 3: 15pm with eight female competitors who nor- mally always support their husbands or other family members during other Dem- olition races for male competitors organ- ized by ASMK during the year. In this event the women were in complete control of their vehicles. This Demolition was the 2ndevent for five competitors while three women took part for their first time. As soon as the cars were driven on the circuit, first they did two parade laps as is normal tradition to start each Demoli- tion Derby. Right from the Start signal the competitors started hitting other compet- itor's cars with spectacular neat technical bumps as allowed by the rules of the game. These eight competitors made a wonder- ful show to the spectators though many of the public present started supporting one cars or other. After about an hour of battle between these competitors the dwell end- ed between Butler and Mallia Magro who for almost 15 minutes were seen to trick each other and try to give the terminal blow to their other competitors car to stop her from the race. Although the car of Malliia seemed to be still more powerful, that of Magro Butler had the rear body parts very well damaged, had one rear wheel without a tire and oth- er other wheel was completely missing. Despite this situation the car of Magro Butler and that of Mallia were still mobile and each tried to find the opportunity to give their opponent the mortal blow to the other car. Here the two cars were being in- spected for driver's safety after each blow. Soon Mallia's car was risking to stop run- ning due to loss of coolant from a badly damaged radiator but the game went on. Suddenly both drivers drove their cars to a head on collision and both car engines stalled. Mallia successfully started her car and moved back while this blow resulted in the car of Margo Butler to terminate any chance for a win. Mallia had been de- clared as the winner of this second edition of the Ladies Demolition Derby 2020. Both finalists greeted each on the roof of one of the two finalist cars. The finalists were also greeted by their husbands who are broth- ers and other competitors and helpers. During the presentation to the winners all competitors were presented with a par- ticipation bronze medals by the President of the Association who also thanked the men competitors who prepared the cars for these women. He also thanked the women competitors for their sporting ex- hibition. The Vice President and the Sec- retary General presented the trophies to the winners Mallia Maronia of the Lada Samara and to the Runner-Up Jessica Ma- gro Butler on a Volkswagen Polo.
