15 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 11 MARCH 2020 CULTURE Experience a dinner under siege IN 2018, a collection of rare documents were acquired for the national collection. Within these manuscripts, a significant insight into what was eaten in Malta in 1799, was uncov- ered. At the time, the island was in flames and civil war was raging all around. On Saturday, 21st March, at 7.30pm, Herit- age Malta is inviting the public to experience a dinner under siege. A dinner inspired by the price list of the Bormla Market in 1799. This event, which forms part of the Taste History series, is taking place at St Angelo Hall in the Malta Maritime Museum, Birgu. At the end of the 18th century, Republican France and its Maltese supporters were be- sieged by land and by sea. Maltese Congres- sional troops kept watch on land, while Portu- guese and British ships kept up the blockade on the sea. The noose was tightening around Repub- lican Malta. The tree of liberty was bearing little or no fruit. Although famine raged with- in the walls, there was still enough food to go around. Brandy, fowls, onions, chestnuts, aged cheese and dried meat were washed down with Italian and Spanish wines. Price is set at €60 for adults and €30 for Her- itage Malta members. Tickets are available from Heritage Malta museums, sites and on- line. Wom- en survivors of domestic violence and their children came together in order to make their voice heard through art. This was done through a series art workshops, facilitated by Ms Jeannette Fiott, a professional and warranted art psychotherapist. The artworks are being presented in an exhibition on the occa- sion of Women's Day which is celebrated on the 8th March, 2020, with the aim of giving a voice to survivors of domestic violence. The idea started off as art lessons by qualified teachers, which were sponsored by Young Women Christian Association (YWCA). This developed into week- ly workshops that gave the women and their children a safe space to engage in self-expression, having a time dedicated for themselves and space for sharing and interacting with others. Through these images the residents found an opportunity to express their deepest emotions in a safe space, giving them a voice even when words were too difficult to be communicated. This enriching process culminated into this beautiful exhibition, displaying the residents' commitment over a period of time, with dedication, and a voice for the most profound forms of expression. A number of organisations and entities supported the residents and employ- ees at Fondazzjoni Sebħ in the course of preparation for this event. These are mainly, the Malta Council for Volun- tarily Organisations through the Small Initiative Scheme, Young Women Chris- tian Association (YWCA), FIDEM Foun- dation and Association of International Women in Malta (AIWM). The support has been greatly appreciated by the resi- dents of Dar Qalb ta` Ġesu as well as by the employees of Fondazzjoni Sebħ. The exhibition was launched on Fri- day 6th March, at 17.30pm at Mater Dei Foyer and will be open on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th March, 2020 between 10.00am and 21.00.
