The survey found that although 53% of people still went to buy the majority of their needs from shops, 19% opted for deliv- ery through phone orders and 11% shopped online. Another 17%, most- ly the elderly, sent someone else to shop for them. The young were more inclined to use delivery services (20% online and 21.1% phone), while the relative ma- jority (46.5%) of those aged over 65 sent someone else to buy for them. Online shopping was the least at- tractive option for the elderly with only 4.7% saying that they utilised the internet to purchase their needs. But online shopping was more popular in Gozo where it was the second most popular method after actual visits to shops. In Gozo, 23.5% of people shopped online. Methodology The survey was carried out be- tween Monday 6 April and Thurs- day 9 April 2020. 652 respondents opted to complete the survey. Strat- ified random sampling based on region, age and gender was used to replicate the Maltese demographic. The estimated margin of error is 5% for a confidence interval of 95% for the overall results. The high marks for the Health Minister's perfor- mance since the pandem- ic broke out are reflected across all age groups, all re- gions and across the political divide. Fearne's approval rating ranks high among 93.4% of women, 89.5% of men, 89.8% of those aged between 18 and 35, and a staggering 95.6% of those aged 65 and over. People were asked to rank Fearne's performance on a scale of one to 10. The re- sults were grouped into three categories: low (scores between 1 and 3), medium (4-7) and high (8-10). Fearne achieved a majority high score across all regions, with his best performance being in the Western region with 94.2% giving him a high score and his 'worst' being in Gozo where 80.2% gave him high marks. The Deputy Prime Minis- ter received high marks from Nationalist and Labourite voters alike – 86.2% of PN voters gave Fearne a high score and 96.4% of PL voters did likewise. Fearne, a paediat- ric surgeon by pro- fession, has been health minister since 2016, having been parliamenta- ry secretary for two years prior to that. Last January, he lost the La- bour Party leadership race to Robert Abela but the period of estrangement soon end- ed a month later when the pandemic started rearing its head closer to home. Fearne captained the health service as it scaled up its preparedness for the crisis. Malta's first case of COVID-19 was registered on 7 March and since then the number of hospital beds to treat coronavirus patients, including ITU facilities, have increased rapidly, and re- strictive measures to curb the virus spread introduced gradually.
