maltatoday | SUNDAY • 24 MAY 2020 6 CULTURE ART The illustrated resistance ENVIRONMENTAL degradation is everywhere you look in Malta. Roads are widened in favour of green spaces, wild- life is dwindling and threatened by hunters, mon- strous blocks are built in place of buildings of herit- age, construction waste piles up high. Cars dominate and there is no emphasis on cycling or other sustain- able modes of transport – as a consequence, air pol- lution is one of the worst in Europe. The shores are littered by plastic and local waters by unregulated fish farms. Artna (the Maltese word for 'our land') is an online exhibition of illustrated posters. "As a newly-formed community of creative illustra- tors, we felt compelled to come together and create a response to the ongoing destruction of both our nat- ural and built environments. Like many others, we're extremely frustrated by the unsustainable over-con- struction and general disregard for the environment by successive governments," the curators of this on- line exhibition say. Artna is organised by the newly formed Malta Community of Illustrators. The community is run by Moira Scicluna Zahra, Ed Dingli, Derek Fenech, Magda Azab, Marietta Mifsud, Steven Scicluna & Zack Ritchie . Follow us for a fresh supply of illustra- tion from our talented members, as well as upcom- ing events. With contributions by over 30 artists, the posters you on the https://artna.online/ are available for free download and can be printed in A4. "Stick them up wherever they might be seen: in your windows, common areas and notice-boards. To show your support and spread the campaign's message, share one of the artworks, or a picture of yourself with a printed poster on social media, using the hashtags #artna #forourland," the organisers say. And when posting on social media, please cred- it the artist and include a link to this website. You are free to download the poster, print at home, and share on social media but not permitted to sell it or make money from it in any other way.
