AX Construction has been working on the project – expect- ed to be completed in 32 weeks' time – for the past few weeks. The aim of this restoration is to achieve complete rehabilitation of the whole area, including full accessibility from the public. Work is mostly focusing on the fortification walls, superior slope/s and platform over the casemated vaults forming the entrance into the city, as well as the structural restoration of the iconic Clock Tower. With this renovation, the bas- tion facades, as well as the clock tower, will be freed from any ac- cumulated accretions and over- grown vegetation. The stone masonry will also be cleaned from stains and biolog- ical growth while the damaged stone feature will be repaired or replaced, depending on its con- dition. The timber and metal apertures will be restored or re- placed, depending on the state of deterioration, with ones hav- ing identical features, design and structure. The centerpiece will also be given appropriate care. The characteristic copper dome, sit- uated at the top of the clock tow- er, will be repaired and restored to its full shining glory. The steel and timber staircase will also be restored and repaired. The construction team is also aiming that the panoramic Bel- vedere and the Gardjola will be brought back to their former glory with this renovation. Ad- ditionally, a specialised contrac- tor has been employed to restore the building's iconic clock and give life to its mechanism. The St. Michael's Bastions and the Remains of St. Michael Cav- alier restoration is the first of a comprehensive project, under- taken by the Grand Harbour Re- generation Corporation for the rehabilitation of the entrance into the city of Senglea. The aim is to render the en- trance more legible from a his- toric perspective, upgrade and landscape the open spaces just inside the walls including Piaz- za Mitrovich, the complete res- toration of the Clocktower and to make the platform over the casemated vaults accessible to the public and provide cultural and ancillary services in the area.
