Delia lost a confidence vote within his party's parliamentary group a fortnight ago and MPs took the matter to the President in a bid to install Therese Co- modini Cachia as Opposition leader. However, last Monday, George Vella decreed that he could not remove Delia from the role be- cause he was still leader of the PN. The survey, which was carried out after the President's decision was known, shows that 32.1% of those who voted PN in the last general election believe Vella should have installed a new Op- position leader. However, 34.5% of PN voters agreed with the President's decision. The result depicts the stark reality of a party split down the middle over the future of its own leader. Among Labour voters, 55.8% agreed with the President's deci- sion to retain Delia in his consti- tutional role, suggesting that La- bour supporters believe the PN leader is an asset for their party's electoral chances. Only 11.3% of PL voters believe the Vella should have appointed someone else instead of Delia. The overall results show that 43.6% of voters agreed with the President's decision to re- tain Delia, while 20% believe he should have replaced him and 11.2% say the matter should have been resolved by the con- stitutional court. A quarter of the electorate is uncertain on how the matter should have been resolved.
