maltatoday | SUNDAY • 13 SEPTEMBER 2020 8 CULTURE WHILE Romania was in lockdown be- cause of the new coronavirus COVID-19, The National Museum of Art of Roma- nia and the Nottara Theater launched the "Frame these Artists" campaign - a joint initiative in response to difficult times for cultural institutions and the need to bring art closer to people. Every Monday, the two institutions published on their Facebook pages im- ages of well-known paintings (and one sculpture) alongside photographs in which actors reenact the work of art. In total, 16 works of art were brought to life by the actors, including a portrait by Peter Paul Rubens, a sculpture by Auguste Rodin and some of the most important Romanian painters. The campaign was very well received by those following the social media pag- es of the two institutions and got a lot of coverage from the local mass-media. The fun, playful way in which the works of arts were presented made peo- ple really look at them and discover de- tails they would have maybe overlooked otherwise, as a result of the natural in- stinct we have to look for resemblances and differences in these kinds of imag- es. In short videos, the 'framed actors' also gave a brief overview of the art- work, based on information provided by the museum's curators.
