9 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 20 SEPTEMBER 2020 CULTURE 'Temi Zammit u D-Deni Rqiq': An innovative 2D animated film in Maltese AFTER the success of Storja An- imalta, Reciprocal returns with Temi: Temi Zammit u d-Deni Rqiq, a 2d animated biographi- cal fiction film in Maltese—the first of its kind to be produced in Malta. Temi will air on Sunday 27 September 2020 at 18:45 on ONE. Sir Temi Zammit is a Maltese historical figure famous for his achievements in many fields, including medicine and ar- chaeology. Temi focuses on the doctor's contribution to the field of medicine, specifically his discovery of how brucello- sis, also referred to as undulant fever, is passed on to humans. His discovery contributed sig- nificantly to the elimination of undulant fever from the Mal- tese Islands, earning him an international reputation and a knighthood. At the start of the film, Temi is appointed member of the Mediterranean Fever Com- mission. The story highlights the multiple challenges Temi had to face as he conducted his investigations and reaches its peak with Temi's discovery, along with others, of how bru- cellosis is passed on to humans. As we have come to expect from Reciprocal productions, this short film is a guaranteed laugh. The serious context of the film is offset by the charac- ters' quirky charm. The script is based on well researched, historical facts that have been interpreted through a humor- ous lens. Biographical fiction is a new genre that Reciprocal is introducing to the local 2d ani- mation production scene. Reciprocal had introduced historical docufiction in 2d ani- mation to the local market with the creation and production of Storja Animalta, a docufiction animated series that consisted of seven episodes in Maltese that aired on ONE in Sep- tember 2019. Storja Animalta won the Award for Intellectu- al Property (2018), awarded by the Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Busi- nesses, and the Medal for Cre- ativity (2018) awarded by the prestigious World Intellectual Property Organisation. Fur- ther to this well-received pro- duction, Reciprocal has pro- duced numerous animations, including self-published and commissioned works. Reciprocal, a partnership between Toontuloon, Promo- tions Ade and Kixott, is an an- imation studio based in Malta. The three companies came to- gether to create and produce 2d productions. This produc- tion has been partially funded by the Arts Council Malta un- der the Kultura TV scheme.
