Keith Schembri refuses to answer
police questions during arrest

KEITH Schembri has refused to answer
questions unless the police disclose the con-
tents of a magisterial inquiry into allegations
that he received kickbacks on passport sales.
The former chief of staff of ex-prime min-
ister Joseph Muscat was arrested by police
at around 12:30am on Tuesday shortly af-
ter a court ordered a widespread freeze on
his assets. He was arrested at his Mellieħa
home.
The move came in the wake of a police
investigation prompted by the conclusions
of a magisterial inquiry into allegations of
kickbacks and money laundering involving
Schembri and Brian Tonna from Nexia BT,
a financial services company.
Tonna and his partner at Nexia, Karl Cini,
were also arrested and interrogated.
Lawyers Edward Gatt and Mark Vassal-
lo yesterday told journalists after visiting
Schembri at the police depot that their cli-
ent will not "participate in the interroga-
tion process" before the conclusions of the
magisterial inquiry are
disclosed.
