TRUTH IS OF NO COLOUR WWW.MALTATODAY.COM.MT/COVID19 SUNDAY • 27 SEPTEMBER 2020 • ISSUE 1090 • PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY AND SUNDAY MATTHEW VELLA NATIONALIST Party lead- ership hopeful Bernard Grech hosted English-lan- guage students at his house for at least five straight years during which thousands in income was never declared to the tax authorities. MaltaToday has confirmed that a 2018 investigation by the Tax Compliance Unit found that Grech was in re- ceipt of over €32,000 in gross income from hosting stu- dents from a school that was not even registered with the Malta Tourism Authority. It is the latest in revelations of the family lawyer's un- explained tax history, with previous reports in Malta- Today, Illum and The Times confirming that Grech had been in default for 12 years between 2005 and 2016, hav- ing not submitted adequate tax returns. Over €30,000 in undeclared income hosting foreign students PAGE 2 maltatoday SAVIOUR BALZAN A former security detail inside the Office of the Prime Minis- ter believed to have acted as a go-between for Keith Schembri and the middleman in the Daph- ne Caruana Galizia assassina- tion, has stated under oath that he never knew of the connection between Melvin Theuma and Schembri. MaltaToday has learnt of sworn statements given by Kenneth Camilleri, a security detail for Joseph Muscat, confirming that Camilleri had met middleman Melvin Theuma at least four times. Camilleri claimed in the state- ment that he was scared of ret- ribution from Schembri, but the information he offered had corroborated his role as an un- witting go-between between his boss and Theuma. From information this news- paper has gathered, the former security detail was adamant in his statement that he was una- ware, when Schembri asked him to meet Theuma, that the ensu- ing conversation would turn to a request for bail for the Degiorgio brothers. Theuma turned State's evidence in December 2019 after being ar- rested on a money laundering charge; the event precipitated the arrest of Tumas magnate Yorgen Fenech, the businessman accused masterminding the assassination of Caruana Galizia. Theuma has said he was commissioned by Fenech – a shareholder in the Electrogas power plant – to or- ganise the hit on the journalist, whose work uncovered the exist- ence of 17 Black, a Dubai compa- ny Fenech owned and was clearly connected to an offshore Panama company owned by Keith Schembri.
