Muscat abused
powers with
Konrad Mizzi
consultancy –
report
MATTHEW VELLA
A report by Standards Commissioner
George Hyzler into a revolving doors
consultancy to former tourism minister
Konrad Mizzi, suggests former prime
minister Joseph Muscat exceeded the
powers of his office.
The as-yet-unpublished report will
find that it was Muscat who as PM,
instructed that the Malta Tourism
Authority regale the outgoing tour-
ism minister Konrad Mizzi to give
him an €80,000 consultancy.
The consultancy was repealed al-
most immediately in the wake of the
public outrage that engulfed the na-
tion when Tumas magnate Yorgen
Fenech was arrested in December
2019. Mizzi, one of the protagonists
in the Panama Papers, was associat-
ed with Muscat's chief of staff Keith
Schembri, who resigned following
Fenech's arrest.

LABOUR MEP Miriam Dalli has accept-
ed to be co-opted into the House of Rep-
resentatives, replacing former prime min-
ister Joseph Muscat after his resignation
from Parliament.
Muscat's resignation paved the way for
a casual election on the second district,
but the two most likely candidates, Mark
Causon and the former minister Stefan
Buontempo, failed to submit their nom-
inations.
The move will allow the Labour Party
executive to officially nominate Miriam
Dalli to be co-opted to the House.
An earlier attempt to convince Labour
backbencher Etienne Grech to resign
his seat in favour of Miriam Dalli failed.
But Cabinet sources yesterday said
Dalli, a vice-president of the Socialists
and Democrats in the European Par-
liament, said Dalli had accepted to be
co-opted.
