maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 NOVEMBER 2020 6 DANCE RED Bull Dance Your Style, a street dance competition with global scale, has announced a new digital format that takes the latest phenomenon of online dance challenges up a notch. Participants stand a chance to share their talent with the world – where the world choos- es the winner – all on TikTok. TikTok has established the power of a trending dance and has recently launched creators from Jojo Akams / @Akamz- twenty20 to Taylor Pierce / @ Taylor_thatdancer. From hip-hop to popping, house, locking and more, street dance includes a variety of fab- ulously creative, can't-look- away dance styles, which all got their start from performances and battles outside traditional dance studios. Since 2018, Red Bull Dance Your Style has provided a plat- form for street dancers to show off their skill and originality in head-to-head battles across more than 30 countries, with victory decided by audience vote. Last year alone, the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final, hosted at the historic Grande Halle de La Villette, was the culmination of a dance battle series comprising 65 events held across 30 countries throughout the year, where attendees ultimately decided who ruled the dance floor by their votes. Here's how dancers anywhere can compete in the new "Red Bull Dance Your Style Chal- lenge": Step 1: Sign up for a TikTok account (if you don't have one already). Step 2: Upload a 30-second audition video of your take on "Get Loose Now" from the Black Eyed Peas. Be sure to tag @RedBullDance and use hash- tag #redbulldanceyourstyle. Get it in by November 15! Step 3: Judges will choose eight dancers from the audi- tion to move on and compete along with eight pre-selected Wildcard dancers in the finals, where the public will choose the winner using TikTok's poll function. Step 4: From 25 November to 13 December, follow @Red- BullDance and vote for the dancer you think delivered the best moves in the 2020 finals. If you're the winner of the Red Bull Dance Your Style Chal- lenge, you'll be guaranteed a fast track toward a spot in the 2021 Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final – keeping you in the spotlight. The judges are some of the biggest international names in dance: hip-hop dancer, teacher and choreographer Majid Kes- sab / @majidk47 of Germany; Japanese waacking freestyler and global performer Ibuki Im- ata / @ibuki.japan; and US hip- hop dancer, actor and "So You Think You Can Dance" winner Leon "Kida the Great" Burns / @kidathegreatofficial. "Street dance is real and raw, and it's a big inspiration for other dance styles now. Al- most everybody is touched by watching it, because you can see personalities and emo- tions. You can have three dif- ferent people dancing the same style, but they won't interpret it in the same way. That's the magic," Kessab, also known as Magilla, said. "A lot of dancers don't have the chance to travel around and share their skills. Now they can show the world what they've got online. This opportunity gives them the chance to be part of a big event from home."
