maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 NOVEMBER 2020 9 ALMANAC Nature 733. Hawthorn THE black redstart (M. fjamma sewda) is rather special to this col- umn, as it was the first species to start off the series in January 2006. Black redstarts are now starting to turn up, having flown in from mainland Europe to spend a mild winter away from the snows and frosts of latitudes further north. What is great about this bird is that you're just as likely to meet it in built-up areas as you would in open countryside. Black redstarts have a strange penchant for factory ar- eas, industrial estates, even building sites, habitats we're not exactly short of. With some luck – and cookie crumbs on your bird table – you may entice it to investigate your garden or balcony, as I did this week. And if you think black, grey and rust-red don't g0 tpgether, you only need glimpse a male of the species to revise that opinion. This informal session will aim at discussing envi- ronmental challenges related to environmental justice in the national, European and global levels. Environmental issues do not affect every- one in the same way. Environmental benefits and risks are not distrib- uted equally between people according to where they live, where they come from, and who they are. Access to nature is unequal, and environ- mental risks, such as pollution, climate change etc. disproportionately affect certain communities. It may be harder to realise it when we have almost unlimited access to some resources… Visit Friends of the Earth's website for more information about our work, as well as information about how to join us.
