16 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 8 NOVEMBER 2020 NEWS JOSEPH R. Biden Jr. has been elected president of the Unit- ed States, defeating President Trump by promising to restore civility and stability to American politics and vowing more ag- gressively to combat the surging coronavirus pandemic. Biden won the race to be- come the next US president, defeating Donald Trump after a cliff-hanger of a vote count fol- lowing Tuesday's election. Biden garnered more than 73 million votes so far, the most ever for a US presidential candi- date. Trump has drawn almost 70 million, the second-highest tally in history. The election has seen the highest turnout since 1900. At 77, Biden will become the 46th president and the oldest man ever sworn into the office. The election, far closer than many experts had predicted, made history. Biden's running mate, Senator Kamala Harris of California, is the first woman, and the first woman of colour, on a winning presidential ticket. Late on Saturday Biden was declared to have won the key battleground State of Pennsyl- vania, sending him over the 270 electoral college vote threshold required to clinch the White House. The result makes Trump the first one-term president since the 1990s. But the Trump campaign yes- terday stated that their candi- date will not concede. Donald Trump himself tweeted on Sat- urday that he had won the elec- tion "by a lot." Biden's win came hours after Trump made a rambling state- ment in the White House, mak- ing unfounded claims that the election was being stolen from him because of fraudulent votes, prompting condemnation from within his own party. In a statement, the Trump team said "beginning Monday, our campaign will start prose- cuting our case in court to en- sure election laws are fully up- held and the rightful winner is seated." Unofficial results from states that have already finished count- ing their votes indicated a Bid- en win, as do the expected re- sults from states like Wisconsin where the count was continuing. President Trump had falsely declared himself the winner of the election when vote counting had barely started. He has since alleged irregularities in count- ing, but has failed to present any evidence of election fraud. His campaign has filed a bar- rage of lawsuits in various states on Friday, as Biden appeared on the cusp of victory. More litiga- tion is expected to follow. The newest vote totals in Penn- sylvania give Biden a lead out- side of the automatic recount threshold. Adapt for the future.
