maltatoday | SUNDAY • 8 NOVEMBER 2020 6 Acclaimed Author to be Interviewed at Malta Book Festival 2020 AN exclusive interview with award-nominated and interna- tionally celebrated author M N Grenside promises to be a pro- gramme highlight in the Na- tional Book Council's upcoming Malta Book Festival 2020. During the interview hosted by Jo Caruana, Grenside will reveal his inspiration and the story outline behind his ex- plosive thriller novel Fall Out, which was released to critical acclaim earlier this year. The Malta-based author and producer will also lift the veil on Tinseltown with stories of Hollywood, some famous names and outrageous anec- dotes, as he looks back on his eclectic career that has includ- ed Kidnap, Ransom and Extor- tion Insurance, working for Jim Henson and The Muppets©, spanning the entertainment in- dustry from movies and televi- sion to music, as well as serial entrepreneurship. "I am delighted and honoured to be part of this year's Malta Book Festival, to share my pro- cess of writing Fall Out with other reading enthusiasts like myself," explains Mr Gren- side. "I wanted to wrap up all the knowledge I've gained over the course of my career into a thriller based in the movie in- dustry, so it will be fun to take a trip down memory lane in the interview as well." Using his unique inside knowledge of the film indus- try and meticulous research, Grenside has crafted a thrill- a-minute page-turner based on the true scandal of a multi-bil- lion-dollar theft and murder. In Fall Out, an LA screenwriter is killed shortly after complet- ing his latest script and sending it to a specific group of people, all connected to a movie that had abruptly stopped shoot- ing years before and echoes events from the past. Producer Marcus Riley sets out on an in- creasingly dangerous quest to get the film made, and, along- side designer Melinda (Mako) de Turris and other recipients of the screenplay, escape an as- sassin from the past. Among the many rave reviews already received international- ly, award-winning producer Alan Moloney has described Fall Out as a 'tautly written, en- tertaining thriller that will keep the reader turning the pages right till the very end' and 'sits somewhere between The Da Vinci Code and Indiana Jones'. The book has also been nomi- nated for a number of awards, including the prestigious 2021 CWA Daggers Awards in the John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger category and Theak- ston's Old Peculier Crime Nov- el of the Year for 2021. Mean- while, the audiobook for Fall Out is set to be released on 8 December, and discussions are under way for a series made for television. Mr Grenside is al- ready working on the sequel to his stunning debut novel, part of which will be set in Malta. CULTURE Mark Grenside HEARTS Beating in time re- leases the highly anticipated music video for SIMONE'S, the first single off her second album Songs for Girls. The catchy and upbeat song walks you through the very relatable story of two close friends wandering the streets of their new home. They meet at a bar called "Simone's Kleine Kneipe" in Berlin which lead to the title "Simone'S" . They eventually spend the night walking around in the cold, until they can't go any further and wind up on a bench talking about everything and nothing until the sun comes up. Simone's is the brainchild of this night-long conversation between two friends, bringing together echoey vocals, moving beats and layered synth sounds to deliver hopelessly roman- tic lyrics against the backdrop of 80s influenced sounds to communicate a plethora of paradoxes like learning to let go whilst also coming to terms with embracing heartbreak. This has all been done through fluid movement and simple lyr- ics Hearts Beating in Time me- lodiously succeeds at embody- ing metamodern sensibilities fuelled by a fascination with the struggle between feelings of hope and futility, the disap- pointment of losing love, and the highs of fleeting encoun- ters, along with the naivety of unknowingly finding meaning in the meaningless. Simone's also features the vocals of singer Tiffany Khal- il.Rebecca Theuma, the brain and voice behind Hearts Beat- ing in Time, has been involved in the Maltese music scene for the past 10 years, starting off as a drummer with Stolen Creep, and then with Bark- barkdisco who she also toured with. Heavily influenced by the styles of Grimes, St. Vincent, Magnetic Fields, Jeffrey Lewis and Jamie xx. Hearts Beating in Time has been making music as a solo artist since 2018 and has been working on Simone's for the past couple of months. She lives in between Malta and Berlin producing electron- ic music as a solo artist.
