Funeral mass will be cel- ebrated by Archbishop Charles Scicluna. Friggieri passed away on 21 November. He was an intel- lectual, a poet, novelist, liter- ary critic, and minor philos- opher. The government an- nounced a state-organised funeral in honour of Friggieri and his "extraordinary con- tribution" to the country. Today is also an official day of mourning. Principal Permanent Sec- retary Mario Cutajar has of- ficially written to Permanent Secretaries, Directors Gen- eral, Directors and Heads of Public Entities to fly flags on public buildings at half-mast. The funeral cortege will leave Mater Dei Hospital at 12:45pm to the University of Malta where Friggieri spent decades lecturing in the De- partment of Maltese, where he also served as head of de- partment and professor of literature. From there, the funeral pro- cession will proceed to his private residence in Fleur-de- Lys, and on to stop in front of the St Publius church in Flo- riana, Friggieri's birthplace, where he will be greeted by the Floriana Local Council and the parish clergy. The procession will then proceed to St John's Co-Ca- thedral. At the end of the mass, the funeral will contin- ue in a strictly private form. The government said that due to the pandemic, only those who receive an official invitation will be allowed to enter St John's Co-Cathedral. The mass will be broadcast on TVM and the Maltagov Facebook page. Oliver Friggieri's funeral today as government declares day of mourning Oliver Friggieri
