maltatoday | SUNDAY • 29 NOVEMBER 2020 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 737. Northern Lapwing ITS official name is lapwing but many in the UK also call it 'peewit' and it's a name you only appreciate if you hear it calling. Last I heard one I thought it was kids playing a toy trumpet – over my head! But it was only a lapwing sounding its fluty squeak. Lapwings (M. venewwa) often visit wetlands to poke about for worms at the water's edge. But they are also at home in grassy meadows, where insects and worms are also to be had; in fact the few lapwings that turn up here in late autumn often head for places like the airport. With their head crest, patterns and metallic plumage, lapwings are beautiful specimens of the bird world. But despite their declining status, their name is on that shameful list of birds that can be legally shot for sport. So hunters blast them dead with righteous zeal.
