The number of people who died of the virus in Malta now stands at 187. The health authorities said the latest victims were an 86-year-old woman who test- ed positive on December 2, a 76-year-old woman who tested positive on December 12, an 86-year-old woman who test- ed positive on October 16 and an 84-year-old man who tested positive on December 16. All four victims died at Ma- ter Dei Hospital, the ministry said. It urged the public to re- main vigilant and continue to observe measures intended to stop the spread of the virus, over the festive season. In more positive news, Malta was said to be one of a hand- ful of European countries with a very low incidence of posi- tive cases from those tested for COVID-19, EU data shows. With a testing positivity rate below 4%, Malta joins Finland, Norway, Ireland, Denmark and a few regions in recording the lowest incidence of coronavi- rus cases. The weekly update by the European Centre for Disease and Prevention Control shows that Malta is also among sev- en countries within the second highest testing rate category. Only Cyprus and Denmark have higher testing rates. Since the start of the pan- demic, Malta has been testing profusely for coronavirus with the latest data from yesterday showing that since March, hos- pital labs carried out 479,097 swab tests. Health Minister Chris Fearne welcomed the latest ECDC da- ta, insisting the key to keeping the pandemic under control was adhering to safety meas- ures and profuse testing to find and isolate the positive cases.
