8 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 23 DECEMBER 2020 NEWS MELITA has upgraded StellarWiFi, its high-speed home internet wifi service, as changes in the use of home internet brought about by the COVID-19 pandem- ic become more permanent. As part of this upgrade, which is being implemented without any price increases, Melita is now using eero, an Amazon wifi system, to deliver whole-home wifi mesh coverage in customers' homes. In addition to the offering high-speed connectivity, each eero mesh wifi access point provides up to 140 square metres of coverage within the home. Melita StellarWiFi customers will get access to the eero mobile app which mon- itors coverage and suggests the best posi- tioning in the home for each eero access point. Furthermore, customers can use the eero app to manage their wifi network, pause the internet and share their network with friends or guests, regardless of whether the customer is at home connected to their ee- ro network or on-the-go. "StellarWiFi has always delivered high speed wifi throughout the homes of our internet customers and has proved very popular over the past few months as peo- ple spend more time at home, working and studying," Mireille Muscat, Head of Mar- keting at Melita, said. "As these changes become permanent, Melita took the decision to invest in fur- ther enhancing the service to give an even greater range of high speed internet access whilst giving our customers peace of mind by allowing them to manage internet use in a way that best suits them and the needs of their household." By using eero's dual-band wifi devices to create a mesh network, StellarWiFi sends wifi throughout the entire home, ensur- ing that customers get a faster, more reli- able connection regardless of where they choose to stream, work, or play. For those who need, or prefer, to main- tain physical distancing, StellarWiFi can be ordered online, the eero access points delivered to the customer's home, then set up and customised in minutes by the cus- tomer. StellarWiFi is available to Melita fibre power internet customers from €2.99 per month or comes included if custom- ers choose 500 Mbps or 1,000 Mbps fibre powered internet as part of their Flexi Bundle. The Malta Hub forms part of EIT Urban Mobility – a wider knowledge and innovation com- munity established by the Euro- pean Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), which ad- dresses how people move around in Europe's towns and cities and proposes solutions for the benefit of both residents and the envi- ronment. Malta recently joined EIT Ur- ban Mobility through the EIT Regional Innovation Scheme (RIS), which is designed to boost the ability of countries classified as modest or moderate innova- tors by the European Innovation Scoreboard to enhance the local innovation ecosystem to support innovation in urban mobility by sharing good practice and exper- tise. Since its launch earlier this year, the EIT Urban Mobility's Malta RIS Hub has already made an im- pact on the island's urban mobil- ity issues through championing a variety of related activities. Launched in September 2020 at the Chamber of Commerce by the Minister for Transport, In- frastructure and Capital Projects Hon. Ian Borg, the EIT Urban Mobility's Malta RIS Hub aims to inspire positive change to safe- guard accessible and sustainable mobility for all. Led by the Project Aegle Foundation (PAF), the Hub is a consortium of three partners: PAF, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology and the Valletta Cultural Agency, through the Valletta Design Cluster. "The main objective of this Hub is to facilitate networking and collaboration between all the stakeholders, while sharing international best practice and developing opportunities for local players representing in- dustry, academia, research, in- novation and cities," PAF Lead Project manager, Camille Bon said. In the months since its launch, the EIT Urban Mobility's Malta RIS Hub has conducted sever- al activities with these goals in mind. Its first was to build an understanding of Malta's urban mobility situation, including planned and ongoing related projects, through extensive con- sultation with stakeholders from private and civil organisations, academia, and the public. Following an educational gap analysis to understand how Mal- ta's curriculum could be updated to better address the changing needs of the transportation in- dustry, the Hub also hosted an innovation workshop to identify ways to support entrepreneurs and related start-ups in Malta. Meanwhile, an ideation event was organised to collect ideas from entrepreneurs, change- makers, architects and residents to enhance the local commuting experience. Successful start for Malta's EIT Urban Mobility RIS Hub
