maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 JANUARY 2021 4 CULTURE THE golden voice of Tatiana Lisnic joins the melodic notes of harpist Britt Arend in a concert of Lieder in French, German and Russian by Fau- re, Lizst, Strauss and Rachmaninoff amongst others. The concert will take place on Satur- day 23 January at 8pm. From as early as the 12th century AD, the German word 'lied' is used to refer to a polyphony which brings together poetry and classical music. English speakers refer to it as 'art song', a genre which flourished in the Romantic era. Much like alchemy, the sum of the individual components re- sults in a magical sound. Limited tickets are available at €5. Beethoven at Home The illustrious musician, pianist and conductor Brian Schembri is playing a Beethoven masterpiece, the Ham- merklavier sonata, in the Valletta Cul- tural Agency's Beethoven at Home project. This sold out performance is the final in a series of three and will be held on Thursday 14 January at 7pm. Taking place in residential houses, this project celebrates Beethoven's memory; his company and music be- ing enjoyed, admired and felt by those around him, during a relaxing evening. The Unknown Legendary Sammy The Strada Stretta Concept calendar for 2021 starts with The Unknown Legendary Sammy. It features a live performance by The Sammy Murgo Quartet which is composed of Heath- cliff Balzan on piano, Noel Grech on drums, Mario Aquilina on bass guitar and, finally, the iconic Sammy Murgo on saxophone. Taking place at Splendid for one night only, the Sammy Murgo Quartet will be performing classic jazz stand- ards, as well as the best of Swing, guar- anteed to get everyone's feet tapping!
