9 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 6 JANUARY 2021 NEWS Man charged with stealing soft drinks and bicycle MATTHEW AGIUS A Valletta resident with a history of vio- lent crime has been released on bail after stealing boxes of soft drinks and a bicycle from various parts of the capital city. Mohammed Mokhtar Mohammed Jamhur, 30, from Libya was arraigned on charges of theft and aggravated theft, as well as recidivism. Jamhur is no stranger to the courts of justice. In November 2016, he received a sus- pended sentence for stabbing his wife's lover, only to return to court, three days later, charged with threatening the man he stabbed. He was convicted of com- plicity in theft in 2017. On that occa- sion, the court had extended a proba- tion order he had already been placed under. Later that year he was charged with attempting to break in to parked cars. Lawyers Franco Debono and Frances- ca Zarb, defence counsel to the man, in- dicated that he would be admitting the charges and suggested probation. The Court, instead, opted for a pre sentencing report. Debono said the presentencing report would also serve as a form of bail super- vision. Inspector Daryl Borg, prosecuting to- gether with Inspector Michael Vella, said that the man would need very strict conditions but did not object to bail. Bail was granted against a personal guarantee of €8,000. No deposit was required, after his lawyer said the man did not have the financial means to pro- vide this. Jamhur was warned to obey his supervising officer and to observe a court-imposed curfew. MATTHEW AGIUS 19-YEAR-OLD Mustafa Adramaha from Senegal is the latest person to be jailed for the possession and making use of a false passport. False document cases have become increasingly common over the past few years. Those caught making use of the documents practically always end up facing at least six months in prison, but this has not stopped many from trying their luck. Adramaha, who resides at Birzebbugia, was ar- raigned before magistrate Claire Louise Stafrace this afternoon after being arrested at the airport on Monday. Dressed in a red parka jacket and knee-length shorts, the man spoke at length with an interpreter before the sitting began. He was accused of being in possession of a false passport, knowingly making use of a forged docu- ment and possession of falsified immigration doc- uments. Lawyer Charmaine Cherrett said that she had spoken to the accused through the interpreter and that the man wanted to plead guilty. The court asked Adramaha to confirm his guilty plea before it. The man pleaded guilty once again, despite be- ing given time to reconsider. Finding Adramaha guilty on his own admission, the court sentenced him to imprisonment for six months. Inspector Hubert Gerada prosecuted. 19-year-old jailed over fake passport Man admits to threatening, slightly injuring his girlfriend A man from Ta' Xbiex has been released on bail after al- legedly harassing, threaten- ing with violence and slightly injuring his girlfriend on 3 January. No details about the in- cident which took place at the accused's residence in Ta'Xbiex, emerged in Mag- istrate Claire Louise Sta- frace's court this morning. Sources said that an inter- nal door was broken in the tumult. The man pleaded guilty and was released on bail after his legal aid lawyer, Charmaine Cherrett, asked for a pre-sentencing report. He was released on bail against an €8,000 personal guarantee until the report was concluded. The court prohibited the man from approaching the parte civile in the mean- time. Inspector Audrey Micallef prosecuted. Man injured in Qrendi fireworks incident A 35-year-old man suffered serious burns in an incident at a Qrendi fireworks factory on Monday afternoon, the police said. The man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment. Police said his condition was described as se- rious. The incident occurred as the man worked on a petard. A police investigation is ongoing.
