maltatoday | SUNDAY • 31 JANUARY 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 747. Pygmy White-toothed Shrew If you write out the name 'pygmy white-toothed shrew', chances are the name will be longer than the animal it represents. Shrews are small mammals, and at just 50mm the pygmy white-toothed (M. bugeddum) – also known as the Etruscan shrew – is the smallest among the small; indeed it was long thought to be the smallest mam- mal on earth until a seriously minuscule bat snatched the trophy for smallness. Shrews are related to hedgehogs but as they look rather like mice they are often persecuted as vermin, which they are not. Indeed, shrews are excellent hunters of creepy crawlies, and a cock- roach stands no chance once the shrew's long nose locks on its scent. Shrews are also very timid, which is why few people get to see these endearing creatures. Like the hedgehog, the pygmy shrew is a pro- tected species.
