maltatoday | SUNDAY • 21 FEBRUARY 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 750. Wren THE wren is a pygmy of the bird world. It's so small you could close your hand over it without hurting it (not that you should – like most birds that visit us, it's protected). We don't often see this species here, as most wrens on mainland Europe are resident and don't migrate much. A few probably occur every year and perhaps spend the winter too, but their tiny size and secretive habits – hence the Maltese name bumistur – makes them easy for even the avid birdwatcher to miss, although its thin trill of a call usuall gives it away. The wren's round compact shape with the very short tail, which it often holds cocked straight up, perhaps gives this bird in the character department what it lacks in size. The exhibition as a metaphor is the archetypal uncanny moment: frighteningly strange and defined by an occurrence that violently alters the patterns of nature. Fans of space. The Nasa rover, Perseverance, has successfully landed on the surface of Mars, seven months after leaving Earth. Its landing, on the Jezero Crater, means work can now begin on searching for evidence of ancient life on the Red Planet. Fans of reggae. The legendary toaster U-Roy has died aged 78.
