maltatoday | SUNDAY • 7 MARCH 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 752. Gadwall BEING an island, we get our fair share of wild ducks winging along our shores or across the channels. Our lack of lakes, on the other hand, renders us less attractive for ducks to actually settle. The thou- sands of hunters out for the kill doesn't help the situation either. It is only at Ghadira and Is-Simar that lake-loving species can make a stopover in relative safety. One of our rarer ducks is the gadwall (M. kuluvert griz). While not particularly colourful, a good look through the binoculars will show up the fine pattern on its breast and flanks. That and its scarcity makes the gadwall a favourite duck among local birdwatchers. Unfortunately – like most other ducks – the gadwall is on the list of huntable birds.
