maltatoday | SUNDAY • 4 APRIL 2021 5 MUSIC ĠENN release wild ride of an EP 'Liminal' DRAWING influence from a wide range of eras and genres, Brighton-based troupe ĠENN (pronounced Jgreenn) release their highly anticipated new EP 'Liminal' today via London independent Everything Sucks Music. From the opening bass ostinato of its first track 'Feel' to the hooky refrain of closer 'Fall- ing Out', through rock'n'roll, psychedelia and funked-up, post-punk vibes, 'Liminal' is a veritable journey. Recent single 'Mackerel's Funky Mission' is an escap- ist anthem which sees vocal- ist Leona Farrugia chanting hauntingly as she inhabits the soul of a fish in a bid to free her mind from the confines of Covid-mandated lockdown, and undesirable situations in general. '23rd March' was also inspired by the unfolding po- litical events of 2020 and 'Feel' personifies a relationship with drugs through drone-centred psychedelia in an ode to 70's music and jamming. These singles from 'Liminal' have re- ceived love from CLASH, DIY, BBC 6Music, Radio X, Amaz- ing Radio and more. The collection as a whole is a musical riot, ready to rock your ears and mess with your brain. ĠENN's line-up is completed by Janelle Borg (guitar), Leanne Zammit (bass) and Sofia Rosa Cooper (drums). After releas- ing their debut album 'Titty Monster', the band performed across Europe and the UK; they have had the pleasure of sup- porting the likes of Hands Off Gretel, PINS, Acid Mothers Temple, The Orielles and Hon- eyblood. ĠENN are set to play this year's online edition of The Great Escape Festival in May. Reviews "The band's vastly creative approach thrives on opening out standard tropes to new ide- as." - CLASH "Full of lemon sharp psyche- delia and boasting a beauti- ful mess of influences" - One Great Song "ĠENN might have just found the sound we need." - Get In Her Ears Liminal EP cover (left), Leona Farrugia, Janelle Borg, Leanne Zammit and Sofia Rosa Cooper (above)and Feel Single Artwork (left)
