maltatoday | SUNDAY • 11 APRIL 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 757. Stonecrop IT cannot be fun for a plant to live exposed and unprotected in the blistering heat and glare of the sun. Indeed, many plants use various devious ways to avoid this, some dry out their exposed parts and sleep off the summer as a bulb, others live in the shade, and others still just seed and wither before the mercury starts creeping up. Not the stonecrop! This hardy plant of rocky places braves it all, and to prove it, it basks in the sun in full flower too. Its secret is in its succu- lence, that is, it stores rainwater in its leaves during the wet season, and then slowly uses up the store over the dry period – in camel fashion, if you like. Stonecrops (M. sedum) produce a lovely splash of lemon yellow flowers on tallish stalks.
