5 NEWS 22.4.2021 AS part of a significant public realm en- hancement project across London's Roy- al Parks, architecture and design practice Mizzi Studio recently saw the installa- tion of a brass tubular food kiosk at the foot of Buckingham Palace, representing the final leg in the project's completion. In summer 2017, on behalf of artisan brand Colicci, Mizzi Studio designed the landmark Serpentine Coffee House and a family of nine kiosks for prominent lo- cations within e Royal Parks, London. e kiosks' installation roll-out began in October 2018, with the final kiosk erect- ed on site at St James's Park this month. April 2021: Characterising the largest mobilisation e Royal Parks has seen in 14 years, the high-profile commission included the delivery of a coffee house near the Serpentine lake, as well as nine handcrafted kiosks to replace ageing food kiosks on existing sites across Hyde Park, Green Park and St James's Park. e most recently erected structure, the flagship Horseshoe Bend kiosk in St James's Park, is clad in tubular brass and mirrors the ornate precious metals of the nearby Sir omas Brock's Queen Victo- ria Memorial. Responding to the Grade I listed land- scape, Mizzi Studio has designed each kiosk to sit sympathetically in its envi- ronment. e freestanding kiosks are conceived as a family of individual cur- vaceous structures with a graceful tree- like canopy that unites their design lan- guage. e initial eight kiosks are clad in hand steam-bent English oak timber, developed in collaboration with British designer and maker Tom Raffield. e kiosks' 360-degree sculptural can- opy swells outwards like a tree's crown, creating recognisable silhouettes. e organic- inspired volumes follow a con- tinuous shape with varying degrees of curvature and differing cladding profiles, each providing contrasting textures. Each design variation is informed by the architectural or organic elements that the kiosk shares its space with. Together with Colicci's Director Rob Colicci, Jon- athan Mizzi, Director of Mizzi Studio, spent months exploring the parks' herit- age. Each kiosk is unique, tailored to the history, nuances and demographics of its respective site. e materiality of the Horseshoe Bend kiosk marries with Mizzi Studio's Ser- pentine Coffee House, sited metres away from Zaha Hadid's Serpentine Sackler Gallery, with views towards the pic- turesque Serpentine Lake in one direc- tion and the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain in the other. e coffee house is swooping and sinuous, inspired by both the lake itself and the motion of a stingray's flight. Its sculptural brass roof gives the appearance of a giant golden cape being pulled through the air over the entire structure, bringing movement and texture to the verdant landscape in which it sits. Mizzi Studio has collaborated with Colicci on a number of projects over the years, including the multi award-win- ning copper café at London's West- field Stratford shopping centre and e Pheasantry Café within Grade I Listed Bushy Park. eir joint body of work has had a strong focus on craftsmanship, a connection with nature, and creating memorable sculptural moments. JCI Malta, as the national organisa- tion, currently has three local organi- sations under its belt - JCI La Valette that promotes business and entrepre- neurship, JCI Wignacourt that focus- es on civic responsibility, and JCI de Rohan that centres on self-develop- ment. JCI Gozo will complement this set-up and will be the first local or- ganisation named according to its geographical region and not after a Grandmaster. "Throughout the years we have seen young people in Gozo seek more op- portunities on the island. It was only a matter of finding the right time for us to start a local organisation on our sister island to ensure that the lead- ership opportunities that we offer are accessible to people on either is- land. The goal is for JCI Gozo to be a fully established organisation by the upcoming AGM, with a local board heading it and a passionate group of members ready to better themselves and in turn, create positive change within their communities", said Nicole Borg, JCI Malta National Pres- ident who is leading this initiative. JCI Malta is currently recruiting members who are based in Gozo and who are interested in forming the first local board of the organisation to drive this forward and make it a sustainable local organisation within JCI. Additionally, JCI Malta is also look- ing for people interested in being members and forming part of this new Gozitan community. If you're aged between 18 and 40, live in Gozo, and are interested in forming part of an international lead- ership organisation, get in touch with Nicole Borg on nicole.borg@jci.org. mt or contact JCI Malta through their social media channels.
