maltatoday | SUNDAY • 2 MAY 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 760. Temminck's lark HALF the 400 bird species recorded in Malta are common or fre- quent, regulars so to speak. The other half, however, are rare, very rare or heart-stoppingly rare. One of these heart-stoppers turned up in the past days: a Temminck's lark (M. alwetta tal-qrun). Nothing large or particularly colourful – indeed if the bird didn't move you were hard put to spot it. A very small, very smart customer, poking about for insects among the rocks, with the black-and-white face pattern and characteristic 'horns' that make it easy to identify. It's only the fifth record ever of this bird in Malta, which is why it caused excitement in the birding community. The Temminck's lark is a bird of sub-desert regions of North Africa, and not given much to mi- grating. But under certain weather conditions, one turns up where it usually doesn't. It questions the parallels drawn between the interrelationship between the state of mind and destructive manifestations of untamed landscapes. A more utopian and sometimes even a humorous perspective is adopted to act as a starting point to diminish the effects of disorientation in the conscious mind. Launching on the 30 of April until 12 June 2021, the exhibition, curated by Elyse Tonna, includes photography, photographic-sculptural work, moving image and participatory- based works. For West End fans. Smash hit musical Hamilton is planning to be back in London's West End this summer, more than a year after it closed because of the pandemic. Many shows are making plans to reopen from 17 May with social distancing, and from June 21 with no restrictions. Bad week for fans of live televised award shows. Just 9.85 million US viewers tuned in to the Academy Awards ceremony, a drop of 58% from the previous low of 23.6 million in 2020. Interest in the event was dealt a double blow by the lack of blockbuster contenders, and audience fatigue with drab COVID- era award ceremonies. Those dates depend on the third and fourth steps on the government's reopening roadmap remaining on track TV Line deemed the event "a painfully earnest snoozefest" Give nature a voice.
