THE European Parliament on Monday launched a €20,000 Daphne Caruana Gal- izia Prize for Journalism, the first winner of which will be announced around 16 October 2021 – a symbolic reminder of the anniversary of the car bombing that took the Maltese journalist's life. Speaking at the launch on Monday, the European Parliament's Director for Media Jesus Carmona explained how the murders of journalists Daph- ne Caruana Galizia, Jan Kuciak and his fiancé Martina Kusnirova and, more recently, Greek journalist Giorgos Karaiva "may be separated by time and geography, but they are united by the principle that freedom of speech and the safety of media professionals can- not be taken for granted". The yearly Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism will distinguish outstanding journalism work based on the principles and values of the Europe- an Union. It will be awarded for pieces on topics of interest linked to European values resulting from in-depth journal- ism undertaken by professional journal- ists or teams of journalists. The initiative was spearheaded by Maltese MEP David Casa and Finn Hei- di Hautala. Welcoming the launch today, Casa remarked, "Each year, the significance of World Press Freedom Day gets more important. We will continue to work to ensure that all journalists are protected and safe from all kind of threats. This is the reason behind Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize. The European Parliament will not leave you alone." Hautala, on her part, said, "The Daph- ne Caruana Galizia Prize will recognise the essential role that journalists play in preserving our democracies and serve as a reminder to citizens of the impor- tance of a free press. This prize is de- signed to help journalists in the vital and often dangerous work they do and show that the European Parliament supports investigative journalists." The €20,000 annual prize will be awarded to journalists or teams of jour- nalists based in the European Union. An external organisation has been cho- sen following a call for tenders to see the project through. Candidates and the eventual laureate will be judged by an independent panel of journalists. He was a biology and environmental science teacher for eight years and a part-time journalist during that time. He was active in the environmental lobby and later co-founded the Green Party in 1989 but left politics altogether in 1997. He worked for the newspapers il-Fehma, Alternattiva, The People, and The Independent. He was appointed editor of MaltaToday in 1999 and today co-owns that same newspaper, as well as the independent media company MediaToday based in San Gwann. At MaltaToday he built a reputation for running the most daring, investigative and independent newsroom. He hosted the TV discussion programme Reporter for seven years on PBS until his programme was stopped in 2009. He now hosts the same daily discussion programme on Favourite Channel. Since his initial interest in dragonflies in 2008 he has been so fascinated by these wonderful insects to the extent that they now oen take precedence over birds.
