maltatoday | SUNDAY • 30 MAY 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 764. Temminck's stint THE Temminck's stint is a small shorebird that turns up every year around our coast. Unlike the very similar little stint, its gregarious cous- in, the Temminck's is bit of a loner, often keeping to itself as it plies the muddy shoreline probing the wet earth for buried worms with its rather long beak; it is also much less common. Over the centuries, Malta's few marshlands have been largely drained and turned to agriculture or built up. So tired migrating shorebirds like the Temminck's stint (M. tertuxa griza) in search of a little peace and quiet have very little habitat now- adays where to stop for a bite or a kip. The best chances for such birds are the wetlands at Għadira, Is-Simar and Salina nature reserves. And Temminck? He was a Dutch naturalist after who a slew of species were named, often because he was the scientist who described them first. HISTORIC win and tears of joy. As the Court forces Shell to reduce its CO2 emissions, the judge leaves no room for doubt: Shell is caus- ing dangerous climate change and must stop its destructive behav- iour now. THIS is a landslide victory for climate justice. Our hope is that this verdict will trigger a wave of climate litigation against big polluters, to force them to stop extracting and burning fossil fuels. This result is a win for communities in the global South who face devastating climate impacts now.
