16 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 13 JUNE 2021 NEWS MATTHEW AGIUS A man arrested in connec- tion with a murder in Marsa this week confessed to the po- lice during his interrogation, a court was told yesterday. Magistrate Rachel Montebel- lo heard police inspector Kurt Zahra explain how Amo Frank Kwaku, 25, from Ghana, con- fessed to the Thursday night murder as he was being arrest- ed shortly afterwards. 23-year-old Isaac Kwabena Kyere was stabbed to death in a fight on Triq it-Tigrija in Marsa late on Thursday night. Kyere was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood and was de- clared dead at the scene. The murder is the first this year. Kwaku had tried to escape from the police by running over rooftops after he was sub- sequently traced to a house in Triq Azzopardi during the early hours of Friday, but was even- tually apprehended. The murder weapon was found under a tree in Triq il- Jum. Construction worker Kwaku, who holds an Italian ID card was arraigned in court earlier today. Police inspector Kurt Zahra told the court that the accused had confessed whilst under ar- rest and had later reiterated his confession during his interro- gation at the police headquar- ters. But upon his arraignment, Kwaku pleaded not guilty to charges which included hold- ing the victim against his will, disobeying police orders and carrying a weapon during the commission of a crime. He did not request bail. Investigations into the kill- ing are still ongoing, with duty magistrate Gabriella Vella lead- ing an inquiry into the case. During today's sitting, magis- trate Montebello upheld a re- quest for a freezing order over the accused's assets. Lawyers Anthony Vella and Etienne Sa- vona prosecuted along with in- spectors Zahra, Wayne Camill- eri and Stacy Attard. Lawyer Cynthia Tommasuolo was legal aid counsel to the accused. Marsa murder: Suspect had confessed, police tell court Man drowns in sea off Bugibba A 62-year-old Englishman lost his life earlier today in an inci- dent in the sea off Bugibba. The authorities were alerted after a body was seen in the sea near the National Aquarium. It is understood that the man drowned. A police spokesperson said an investigation was under- way. TWO new cases of COVID-19 and 4 recoveries from the dis- ease have been recorded in the past 24 hours. No deaths were registered in the same period. Active cases stand at 62. Since the start of the pandemic 30,581 cases have been detect- ed in Malta. Of those 30,100 have recovered. 419 people have died as a result of the dis- ease to date. Official figures released today show 1,721 swab tests carried out in the past 24 hours, bring- ing the total number of swab tests to 951,303. 582,206 doses of the vaccine have been ad- ministered to date.
