3 LETTERS & EDITORIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 JUNE 2021 Mikiel Galea Letters & Clarifications Abortion: a human right I remind Tony Mifsud (Letters, 13 June) that although he is entitled to his opin- ion as to the morality of abortion, he is not entitled to fabricate facts. Sadly, I need to explain to him and his ilk (yet again) that "no unborn children are killed during abortions". How diffi- cult is this to understand? A child is so defined by Maltese law at birth; before that it is a foetus! No "babies are shred- ded" during abortions, as some of his colleagues insist, as each of the several hundred abortions taking place in Mal- ta each year involve taking a few pills by mouth before 12 weeks of gestation. I urge Mr Mifsud to ensure that his facts are correct before expressing opin- ions. Finally, please allow me to declare that the only motive that propels me to be an openly pro-choice gynaecologist is to help women and girls achieve what is theirs by right: the choice of whether to continue with their pregnancy or not, especially now that the EU parliament has resolved that this is a human right. Prof. Isabel Stabile Doctors for Choice Dubai tax evaders IS Robert Abela clamping down on Maltese tax evaders in Dubai? Germany has confirmed that it has bought for €2 million a CD with data about around one million people who have money and investments, not declared in Dubai. The German government is ready to put the data contained on the CD at the disposal of those governments who want to curb down on tax evasion. Does Robert Abela mean business? Is Robert Abela going to ask the German government for the names of the Mal- tese tax evaders in Dubai? Prof. Arnold Cassola Swieqi Against the ban on ICE cars THE Malta Automobile Club has launched a petition against the pro- posals contained in the "green paper" which contemplates the banning of the importation of internal combus- tion engined vehicles. The Club maintains that consum- ers in Malta and Gozo have a right to purchase, own and drive the vehicle of their choice without interference from the government. It is of the opinion that the incen- tives offered to consumers who have an interest in purchasing an electric vehicle are discriminatory. Moreover, the government has no mandate to do anything when it is no longer in pwer. As long as internal combustion engined vehicles continue to be man- ufactured, residents of Malta and Gozo should have the right to pur- chase, own and drive such vehicles, without any interference from the government. If the government were serious about reducing air pollution from transport, it should have promoted the importation and use of ethanol and E10 – petrol blended with 10% ethanol. Unless the government withdraws its proposal to ban the importa- tion of petrol- and diesel-engined vehicles, the Club shall encourage consumers in Malta and Gozo to use their vote to prevent the government from taking such action. The Malta Automobile Club main- tains that electric vehicles are not the future, but part of it. This has been claimed by ePure, the unified voice of the European renewable ethanol industry. The Malta Autombile Club has launched this petition in memory of Dr. Albert Bezzina, a founder mem- ber of the Club. Alfred A. Farrugia Attard
