maltatoday | SUNDAY • 4 JULY 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 769. Common fig PROBABLY everyone who lives in the Mediterranean region knows the fig. It is as quintessentially Mediterranean as the olive and the vine, and popular for its sweet, fleshy fruit that we consume fresh, dried or pulped. The fig has a long and colourful association with people. It was possibly the first plant to be cultivated, predating even wheat, and setting the human race on the course of agriculture and civilisation – it was also Adam's first choice of attire! People carried and introduced the tree wherever they roamed and settled. In Mal- ta, the common fig (M. tin) possibly grew wild well before humans ventured here, though some experts suspect it may have been intro- duced in antiquity. Agreement is unanimous, however, that the flood of warm succulence of the fig's fruit on the taste buds is one of the pleasures of our hot summer.
