Gozo airstrip re-exhumed in development strategy Five-year-old's death: girl had COVID but cause of death unclear KARL AZZOPARDI THE health authorities are in- vestigating the death of a five- year-old girl who died while testing positive to COVID-19. Health Minister Chris Fearne said the girl died on Saturday, having developed a fever on Friday. She was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition, and was intubated and put on a ventilator. She was administered CPR, but died shortly after. The five- year-old was not attending summer school. Fearne said that a magisteri- al inquiry is underway. Should the death be attributed to COVID-19, it would be the 421st coronavirus fatality of the pandemic. JAMES DEBONO A controversial proposal to con- struct an airstrip in Gozo has been re-exhumed in a consulta- tion document by the Gozo Re- gional Development Authority (GRDA), a regulatory authority chaired by Gozitan entrepre- neur Michael Grech. The airstrip had been origi- nally proposed by Eddie Fenech Adami's government in the 1990s and aborted by Alfred Sant in one of his first decisions upon Labour's re-election in 1996. The GRDA was set up by the Labour government in 2020 to prepare a regional development strategy for Gozo and to oversee its implemen- tation. The Speaker's decision caught government MPs Edward Zam- mit Lewis and Glenn Bedingfield on the back foot after the Oppo- sition members agreed with the renewed investigation. This means that the committee will be able to summon witness- es and further the investigation carried out by Standards Com- missioner George Hyzler. Cutajar, a Labour MP, was found to have breached ethics when she did not declare bro- kerage fees from a property deal involving murder suspect Yor- gen Fenech.
