maltatoday | SUNDAY • 18 JULY 2021 6 CULTURE THE Master of Arts in Film Studies course combines the theoretical aspects in Film Studies with a practical com- ponent during which the stu- dents collectively plan and shoot short films, developing them from the scriptwriting to the post-production stages. Due to the COVID-19 pan- demic, last year's two films were postponed and as a re- sult, four films will be made in the coming weeks. In order to help the students reach their full potential and to keep the tight schedule such projects demand, internationally ac- claimed directors active in the European film industry are in- vited to act as mentors. This year, we are very pleased The programme will bring back Silvia Luzi and Luca Bell- ino who have tutored the stu- dent cohort in 2019. They will be overseeing the making of two short films, Son and Lilly. Pre-production on these two shorts started 12 July and the screening of the final products is scheduled to be held on 26 July. The second group of stu- dents, on the other hand, will enjoy the support of Hana Ju- sic and Martijn Smits. Work on the two films Lixka and Miss- ing will commence on 26 July and the screening is to be held on 8 August. A final returning expert is the director of photography Olaf Hirschberg, who will provide guidance and insight to the students so as to ensure that the short films' cinematogra- phy is of the highest standards. The MA in Film Studies course is sponsored by the Malta Film Commission. The sponsorship was present- ed by MIDI CEO Mark Portel- li during a recent visit to the Gzira parish church, where he was shown the restoration works by the parish priest, Rev Fr Gordon Refalo. The renovation project start- ed earlier this year with the cleaning of the paintings and sculptures using a new lifter. This was followed by an ex- tensive painting job of the two side aisles of the church. The next phase is the painting of the church nave and the area around the altar. The restora- tion work is ongoing and is be- ing undertaken by a dedicated group of volunteers from the parish. Whilst commending Fr Gor- don for undertaking such a mammoth task, Mr Portelli said that MIDI's contribution forms part of the Company's commitment to support the Gzira community. Rev Fr Gordon thanked MI- DI for the company's financial support. He said that MIDI's support has gone a long way to ease the financial burden that such a challenging project brings with it. Fr Gordon added the works are now in an advanced stage and the renovation is nearing completion. The first parish church of Gżira was built in 1921. This chapel had a capacity of 200 people which was too small for the increasing population. Consequently, a new church was built between 1921 and 1935.
