Zammit Steven's debut saw her become the first Maltese female weightlifter to be- come an Olympian. She lifted 84kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. The latter result saw her achieve a National Re- cord. She closed the competition with a total of 189kgs. Group winner Kiana Elliot was also at her first Olympic appearance though she partic- ipated in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games held in Nanjing. Later in the day, Chetcuti placed second in his heat during the Men's 100m Freestyle, but did not be progress to the next semi-fi- nal round, as only the fastest 16 athletes across nine heats earned a spot in the 100m freestyle semi-final Chetcuti finished the race in 51.47 seconds, falling behind Yemeni swimmer Mokhtar Al-Yamani by less than a second. The fast- est athlete in the heats, Italy's Thomas Cec- con, completed the race in 47.71 seconds. This was Chetcuti's third time represent- ing Malta in the Olympic Games. He has now concluded all his duties at this year's Olympics, joining Sasha Gatt, Yazmin Zam- mit Stevens, and Matthew Abela. Indoor pistol shooter Eleanor Bezzina will be competing in the 25m pistol qualification tomorrow, while Carla Scicluna will com- pete in the 100m heat on Friday.
