maltatoday | SUNDAY • 15 AUGUST 2021 7 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 775. Cuttlefish DESPITE the name it's not a fish. The cuttlefish is actually related to snails and slugs, with squids and octopuses as its closest relatives. Together they are known as molluscs, and like all molluscs, cuttle- fish don't have bones. The closest they get to bone is that strange white oval thing – known as cuttlebone but isn't bone – that you push through your budgie's cage as calcium supplement. Cuttlefish (M. sicca) are intelligent creatures, and while snorkelling I find few things more fascinating than two males 'arguing' over a lady. They communicate through a psychedelic display of stripey patterns that constantly change shape, hue and intensity as the boys settle who of them gets the girl. Later, the female finds a quiet spot under an overhang (or inside a discarded brick!) where to deposit her precious amphora-shaped eggs. The COP is normally convened every year, and it represents the foremost opportunity for all the heads of state from around the world to come togeth- er and attempt to come to agreements on coordinated responses to the climate crisis, through prolonged negotiation and consul- tations. Also in attendance will be climate experts, lobbyists and campaigners, all trying to influence the outcome of the talks. As we all know by now, urgent action is required globally if we are to avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis, and that no one coun- try acting on their own will be enough, so these talks represent the formal attempts of the world's national governments to address this need for collective action.
