maltatoday | SUNDAY • 22 AUGUST 2021 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 776. Eurasian Oystercatcher OYSTERCATCHERS are large stocky shorebirds. They are quite unmistakable, with smart black and white plumage and a long, deep orange bill. They do actually eat oysters but they fare equally well on limpets, crabs, worms and other invertebrates. Oystercatchers (M. gallina tal-baHar) are not often seen in Malta as they don't migrate much but intrepid birdwatchers looking out at sea do spot small flocks from time to time. Unfortunately their stunning plumage and their scarcity also attract the attention of hunters, who shoot down these beauties despite being protected species. Oystercatchers are also caught in massive wader traps. Couple of weeks ago BirdLife released a number of oystercatchers (along with many other species) that had been confiscated from these infernal and illegal trapping sites. It explores a Maltese family's complex journey of migration that started one century ago, in its search for a better life. It is about looking for a space to inhabit that feels like home, and being pushed out again because of external issues. As it echoes the life-story of many migrants, the exhibition asks: Where can you find a shelter when your native country does not accept your return? The West End. It was meant to open last year then again last month but after a series of Covid related setbacks, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella is only now ready to go to the ball. Comedy.
