14 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 22 AUGUST 2021 PHOTO BY EDWINA GRIMA EYEWITNESS An ode to all women suffering in silence: on Friday 20 August, Young Progressive Beings, Women's Rights Foundation, and fellow supporters gathered near Triton Fountain to commemorate the exhibition of the collaborative photography project of Emma Grima X YPB: 'Unspoken Truths'. The staging of this impactful photoshoot took place one year ago, where people from a diverse set of backgrounds put aside their differences to form a united front against the criminalisation of abortion. Gathering early on a Sunday morning in Valletta, participants stood at a safe social distance, dressed in black, holding clothes hangers that symbolise the lack of safe abortion services in Malta, forcing women to resort to unsafe methods. Photographer Emma Grima, as well as representatives from both Young Progressive Beings and Women Rights Foundation marked the event with speeches, shedding light on the damage caused by Malta's blanket ban on abortion. Malta is the only European Union country with a blanket ban on abortion, and one of just four countries in the world to have such restrictive laws. This has resulted in immeasurable suffering and dire mental and physical health risks. The photography project aims to address this human rights breach by highlighting the prevalence of unsafe abortion methods in Malta. Unspoken Truths
