The ministry has been crit- icised for failing to provide guidelines to parents and teacher, less than one month prior to the reopening of the schools. During a press conference on Tuesday, Caruana said that preparations for the opening are in place and that the ap- proval from the health authori- ties should happen in the com- ing hours. No indications have been provided as to whether the mask mandate would remain mandatory or whether the bubble concept would be re- tained in the new scholastic year. Caruana stated that as a parent, she understands the frustration with the delays of the new plans. She emphasised that the ed- ucation authorities are better prepared this time, as they have a year's experience with the pandemic and the majority of the staff and the pupils of 12 years and above are now vacci- nated. Caruana announced as well that a public conference will take place in the coming days, during which all the details will be announced for all the stake- holders to prepare themselves. She ensured that everything will run smoothly once the school restarts. Man charged with attacking his mother and sister MATTHEW AGIUS A 40-year-old man has been re- manded in custody in view of al- leged violent behaviour towards his mother and sister. The Zabbar man, who is not being named in order to protect his alleged victims, was arraigned before magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras on domestic violence charges this afternoon. Prosecuting police inspector Eman Hayman told the court how last Monday, the two wom- en had gone to the police head- quarters in Floriana to file a report about the escalating vio- lence against them. Hayman said the man's actions were part of a series of incidents which includ- ed beatings and damage to the mother's house. Hayman said the man had been drunk from the day before and had been trying to pick a fight with the alleged victims, who had not reported him to the police before, because they did not want to cause him to be rearrested as he was out on bail for another of- fence. The man was charged with using physical, moral and psy- chological violence against the women, frightening them and demanding money. He was also accused of insulting the victims and threatening them with hard objects, breaching the peace and breaching a previous bail decree. A not guilty plea was entered by the accused. His legal aid lawyer, Yanika Bugeja, did not ask for bail. A request for a protection or- der in favour of the mother and sister, as well as their respective families, was upheld by the court.
