3 LETTERS & EDITORIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 5 SEPTEMBER 2021 Mikiel Galea Letters & Clarifications Selective quoting from religious texts on abortion SELECTIVE quoting from the story- book that some people believe in lit- erally, is the hallmark of religious zealots such as Azzopardi (Letters, 29 August 2021). I have long resisted the urge to reply with quotes that show the exact opposite. Doing so would run contrary to my academic training. Furthermore, the single-minded focus on Catholicism ignores the fact that other religions exist and most are not opposed to women having abortions. In fact, some Christians, such as Protestants, take a more nu- anced approach to choice. Given that good medical practice is borne out of science and not religion, let us please leave the latter out of what is essen- tially a moral and a medical issue. Abortion has always been an op- tion for women in Malta who could afford to travel. Thanks to telemed- icine it is now also within the reach of almost everyone else in the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. I say almost, because there are still those among us who are marginalised: migrants, victims of domestic abuse or sexual violence among others. Decriminalising abortion is the first step to setting these women and girls free. The day will come when this deci- sion will be left in the hands of those with a uterus supported by those who don't need a map to find one. I can't wait. Prof. Isabel Stabile Doctors for Choice Alpene claims on Mamo TCV in Pilatus case IN view of the recent articles in the press (Pilatus wants compensation... 2 September 2021, maltatoday.com.mt) Mamo TCV Advocates states categor- ically that all allegations regarding any fee sharing, consultancy or other ar- rangements between the firm and Pro- fessor John Mamo are entirely false. Professor Mamo had not even been involved in the firm John Mamo & Associates when it merged with Ton- na Camilleri & Vassallo in 2000, much less did he receive any remuneration or financial compensation in connec- tion with the merger or in connection with any engagements that the firm was involved with after the merger took place. As such, any reports linking the firm to Professor Mamo and alleging that he has a financial or any other interest in the firm are totally false. Insofar as allegations that we have seen in connection with the work we have carried out are concerned, we are restrained from commenting on any engagements undertaken by the firm by laws on professional secrecy. Nevertheless, we can confirm that we have always carried out all en- gagements in a professional manner and with the highest levels of integ- rity – as consistently recognised by our peers and clients throughout the years. Michael Psaila Managing Partner Mamo TCV Editorial note The online report has been amended to carry the factual representation of Mamo TCV's comments
