maltatoday | SUNDAY • 5 SEPTEMBER 2021 6 ART SPRING v1.4 collective exhibi- tion is here! Abigail Agius, Rhea Micallef Gavin and Martina Spi- teri: young contemporary artists have been selected as part of the Gabriel Caruana Foundation SPRING programme. Let us in- troduce you to these three art- ists first, who work with differ- ent media and artistic processes. Abigail Agius has recently graduated from Goldsmiths College with a degree in Com- parative Literature. She had worked on a vast number of projects in film, theatre and community arts. Her practice is driven by a curiosity for so- matic awareness and play, looking to create forms which feel liberated and naive. At the moment, she is exploring wool as a textile material to create interventions and other works, transforming linear elements to composite spatial forms. Rhea Micallef Gavin, Maltese and based in London explores the relationship between social identity and the fashion indus- try through portraiture and printmaking. Rhea's explora- tion started during her fashion undergraduate studies at Ra- vensbourne, London and rap- idly became her foremost pas- sion. She makes use of painting as a form of research and inves- tigation into identity. Martina Spiteri is an upcom- ing Maltese fashion design- er and seamstress. Celeste, a brand she set up in 2009, fo- cuses on minimal and unique tailored garments. In her work, she seeks inspiration from Jap- anese art & culture, specifical- ly related to deconstruction in fashion. She has participated in a number of local fashion shows, created costumes for various productions as well as working on projects related to set dressing, music videos, short films and others. This Fall, she will be taking on pro- fessional training in the field by reading for a BA in Fashion Design at ESMOD in Paris. The artworks in Inherent Dis- positions are bound by aspects related to identity and self-ex- pression, the works of Abigail Agius, Rhea Micallef-Gavin and Martina Spiteri are sub- tle interpretations of individ- ual embodiment. In Inherent Dispositions, they challenge fashion-related narratives and interrelated notions linked to consumption, making, adapta- tion and appropriation. Beyond the commonplace definition of fashion as mannerisms result- ing from or due to a particular context and culture, fashion (as a way of doing) is oftentimes a reflection of an individual's be- haviours and preferences in- terlinked to personal realities or societal norms and values, or both. Cultural transmission, awareness and embodiment play a vital role in its develop- ment, especially in the trans- mission of skills, values and style. SPRING v1.4 launches this Friday 3rd September at 5pm and will run until Fri- day 24th September, at The Mill - Art, Culture and Crafts Centre, Birkirkara.
