3 LETTERS & EDITORIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 12 SEPTEMBER 2021 Mikiel Galea Letters & Clarifications Appreciation: Maurice Mifsud Bonnici THE news of Mr Maurice Mifsud Bon- nici's demise has shocked many espe- cially in the telecommunications sec- tor. Engineer Maurice Mifsud Bonnici was such a charming and delightful person, and so very good humoured, and loved by many. I knew Mr Mifsud Bonnici since my telecommunications studentship. In June 1971, I was told to liaise between the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Development, the ministry responsible for telecommuni- cations at that time. In this capacity, I had many occasions to work with Mr Mifsud Bonnici. The first task we had together was the drawing up of a seven-year devel- opment plan for telecommunications. The plan 1972-1979 was drawn up with the participation of engineers and other personnel from various sections. Mr Mifsud Bonnici was a man I much admired for his great ability and fine qualities. He was a very intelligent person both as an engineer, as well as an administrator. Although his demise came at a venerable age, his death was a shock for all who knew him. This appreciation is meant to ex- press my sincere sympathy and con- dolences to Mrs Mifsud Bonnici, their son Mark and other family members, and to all colleagues and friends in the telecommunications field. Joseph Bartolo Luqa Stabile's diatribe I do not mind that Prof. Isabel Stabile has the last word but the subtle title ascribed to the Bible as a story book shows how much respect she has for it. And in a way, she is contradicting herself. How can we leave religion out when she herself considers the abortion problem as a "moral" and a medical issue? My probe to Google indicates that religions (certainly not the major ones) that favour abortion are a minority and if she contends this, she would really be a tureen of purest whimsy. I am dreaming of the day when most nations follow and implement a recent Texas law banning almost all abor- tions. Yes it can be achieved! John Azzopardi Zabbar AS to be expected, Prof. Isabel Stabile rubbishes John Azzopardi who has repeatedly reacted to her relentless campaign to legalise abortion in Malta. It beggars belief that she can even conceive that the possibility for wom- en to snuff out the life of their own offspring is a sign of liberation. Besides having a uterus, one expects a woman to have a compassionate heart, a rational mind and a function- ing conscience. Killing is a crime, and decriminalising it does not change this fact by one iota. You do not need to be a Catholic or have a uterus to reason this out. Besides, morality has never been de- termined by what people do. Also, the whole purpose of a law, is to defend the weak and the vulnerable. Stabile's callous attitude to nascent life is a poor reflection on her charac- ter. And sadly, I very much doubt it will change. Klaus Vella Bardon Balzan
