maltatoday | SUNDAY • 12 SEPTEMBER 2021 7 CULTURE AFTER kicking off with an open-air concert, "GauLive", the final phase of the 14th edition of Gaulitana: A Festival of Music, continues on Saturday 18 Sep- tember. I n t e r n a t i o n a l l y - r e n o w n e d musician Wayne Marshall will be in attendance giving an or- gan recital, his first ever in Gozo. This is being held at the monumental Xewkija Rotun- da, whose grand organ, inau- gurated in 2017, was built by Michael Farley, Organ Builders from Budleigh Salterton, Dev- on, U.K., following the design of Maltese organ architect, Noel Gallo. Marshall's musical journey as organist, pianist and conduc- tor has seen him perform to great acclaim with such great orchestras from across the At- lantic, whether the Los Ange- les Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Wiener Phil- harmoniker, the London Sym- phony Orchestra or the Berlin Philharmonic. He is widely re- nowned, even in Malta, for his interpretations of 20th century cross-over music by Gershwin and Bernstein. For Gozo, the OBE (Order of the British Em- pire) artist will treat the audi- ence with some well-known or- gan repertoire alternated with his typical grandiose organ im- provisations. This world-class event starts at 20.00hrs and will be in full compliance with health pro- tocols. Attendance for is free and reservations are required on bookings.gaulitana@gmail. com. Further information available on the facebook page Gauli- tana: A Festival of Music and www.gaulitanus.com. Gaulitana Festival continues with Wayne Marshall Photography exhibition 'Passivation' by Matt Thompson set to be unveiled in Valletta FOR immediate release. 1st September 2021. Valletta, Mal- ta – British photographer Matt Thompson will unveil his most RECENT series of work enti- tled 'Passivation' at Studio 87, between 8th and 17th October 2021.In this unique selection of photographs, Thompson refer- ences the process of passivation. This is where a bronze material exposed to the en- vironment undergoes a series of chemical reactions, which gives it a pale green outer layer - a patina - that serves to strengthen and preserve. At first glance, the viewer is pre- sented with what appear to be passivized statues. In reality, however, Thompson has pho- tographed real-life subjects and has applied a green patina with digital techniques and a meticulous eye. As Thompson explains, "This transformation of each figure speaks of strength, where the body is shaped by life, its chal- lenges and its experiences, be- coming a positive metaphor for a process that reinforces, not diminishes us." A grad- uate of the London College of Communication, Thompson's connection with photography as a creative medium expresses his desire to go beyond a liter- al interpretation of the subject, inviting the viewer to reflect upon the context of the mo- ment captured. Thompson's work has been commissioned and published by The Guardian, The Evening Standard, The Economist and The Sunday Times. His clients include E.ON, UNICEF, John- son Banks and Publicis Chem- istry. He is a winner of the Brit- ish Journal of Photography's Open Walls 2020 exhibition.
