maltatoday | SUNDAY • 12 SEPTEMBER 2021 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 779. Common Stingray ALTHOUGH sharks are reported around our shores every year, you wouldn't exactly label our coastal waters shark infested. But there's one 'shark' that is quite regular and even common in some areas, and that's the stingray. Admittedly, stingrays look nothing like sharks – they are flat, generally diamond-shaped, no tell-tale shark fin, and sport a long thin tapering tail – but despite looks, stingrays and sharks are closely related. Several species occur in Maltese waters, although the most common by far is the common stingray (M. boll komuni). Stingrays are peaceful creatures who like nothing better than to snuffle slowly along sandy beds (sometimes in just 2m of wa- ter) sucking up worms and other bottom-dwelling creatures. Unfor- tunately, trigger-happy harpooners rarely resist these slow-moving targets. These issues involve the possible impacts on biodiversity, human rights, and the fact that they are one of the main drivers of climate change due to the greenhouse gas emissions these ac- tivities release.
